My first nail station was a folding table and a cheap LED lamp from a discount store. I was doing my cousin’s nails in my living room, and we both had to lean over so far that my back hurt for two days. When I finally opened my own shop, I swore I’d get real

I remember my first facial room. It was basically a closet with a foldable table and a desk lamp I swiveled around to see my client’s pores. The shadows were awful, and I kept missing blackheads. My mentor finally walked in, took one look at my setup, and said, “Honey, you need a proper esthetician

One of my favorite spa owners in Denver told me her clients started complaining about cold towels during facials — in February. She had a cheap cabinet warmer that barely heated above lukewarm and took 40 minutes to warm up a stack. She asked if a spastudio towel warmer was worth the upgrade. I said,

I watched a stylist in Dallas almost throw her back out last month. She was shampooing a client at a station that was too low, and she had to twist her torso to reach the faucet. She told the owner, “I’m not doing this for another year.” That owner called me the next day asking

I remember the look on a spa owner’s face when her landlord told her that installing traditional pedicure stations would require a $12,000 plumbing retrofit. She thought she was out of business before she even opened. Then we spec’d a pedicure chair without plumbing, and she was up and running in two weeks. Here’s why

She finally bought a proper lashes chair and her booking capacity doubled—because she wasn’t in pain anymore. If you’re doing lash extensions for more than 3 hours a day, your chair is your

I remember watching a massage therapist in her 50s struggle to crank a manual table up for a taller client. She had to bend down, crank 15 times, and by the time she was done, her back was already aching. She looked at me and said, “I’m too old for this.” She wasn’t old; she

I walked into a barbershop in Atlanta and the first thing I noticed was the huge crack in the black mat under the third chair. The owner said he bought it at a big-box store for $40, and it lasted 3 months before it started peeling and becoming a trip hazard. He was embarrassed because

I was in a salon in Denver last year, and the owner showed me her “floating” styling station. It looked amazing in the photo she saw online, but in reality, the countertop was barely attached to the wall, and the drawers wouldn’t close properly. She paid $1,500 for a piece that was basically rejected from

Last month, a salon owner from Ohio called me frustrated. She bought three cheap shampoo stations from a local reseller, and within six weeks, two bowls were already wobbling and the third one’s sprayer hose cracked. Her stylists were complaining, clients were getting water down their necks, and she was looking at another grand to
