I was skeptical when a client asked for a ‘Japanese head spa’ treatment last year. I thought it was just a fancy shampoo. Then I tried it at a trade show. The chair reclines, the sink is ergonomic, and the steam machine wraps around your head like a cloud. I walked out and immediately started
There’s a specific kind of client who walks into a shop and specifically asks for “the black chair.” It’s a vibe thing. Black barber chairs look classic, they hide hair clippings better, and they just scream ‘old-school professionalism.’ But finding the right barber chair black model isn’t just about looks. I’ve bought and sold over
You know that feeling when a client sinks into your shampoo chair, closes their eyes, and lets out a little sigh? That’s the sound of repeat business. But if your shampoo station feels like a chiropractor’s waiting room, they’re not relaxing—they’re counting down the minutes. I’ve been in this industry since 2012, and I’ve replaced
Last year, a client came in with a fungal infection she picked up from a cheap pedicure spa that didn’t clean its pipes. She showed me the photos. Her toes were a mess. That’s the risk you take when you buy a pedicure station with a non-removable bowl and call it a day. If you’re
My first nail station was a folding table and a $40 office chair from a liquidation store. By the third week, the chair’s castors had gouged the floor, and my back was in knots because the seat height didn’t match the table. My clients complained about the wobble. I finally invested in a proper nail
I walked into a new salon last month, and the first thing I saw was a cluttered folding table with a laptop, a coffee mug, and a pile of appointment cards. The owner looked stressed, and honestly, the place felt like a DMV waiting room. I spent the next 20 minutes waiting for my appointment,
The first time I did a mobile haircut, I was rinsing a client’s hair over a plastic bin in her kitchen. Water went everywhere. Her cat walked through the puddle. The client was nice about it, but I knew I couldn’t do this long-term. That’s when I started looking at a portable sink for hair—and
You finally signed the lease on that 900-square-foot salon space downtown. You have the mirrors, the styling stations, and the washing area mapped out. Then you start pricing chairs and nearly choke on your cold brew. A single decent stylist chair from a retail supplier runs $400 to $700, and the “luxury” black and gold
When I opened my nail shop in Phoenix, I thought I could mix and match random tables and chairs from office supply stores. Big mistake. Within a month, a client’s chair wobbled and she spilled acetone on her dress. Another chair was too low, and I ended up with sciatica. I finally sat down with
My nail station was a mess. I had a hand-me-down table, a separate cheap dust extractor that vibrated so loud clients joked it was a massage chair, and my files, polishes, and tips were in three different rolling carts. Then I tripped over a cord and sent a $60 bottle of gel flying. That was
