Last month, a shop owner in Houston texted me a photo of her new backwash area: a beautiful ceramic basin mounted on a wall, with a cheap folding chair underneath. The water line was too high, the chair arms hit the basin edge, and her stylist had to twist sideways just to reach the client’s

The perm client is wrapped and waiting, and the machine that should be steaming her hair is sitting in the back room with a dead heating element. The shop down the street has two hairdressing steamers, and it shows in how many chemical service bookings they take. If you offer perms, deep conditioning treatments or

The barber chair is full at 9 a.m. on a Saturday, and three of the next four appointments start with the same thing: a hot towel and a good steam. The steamer in the corner has been working double duty for two years, and this week it started sputtering mid-service. You know what that means

Thursday’s schedule: three house calls across town, a pop-up at a friend’s salon on Saturday, and your regular booth chair the rest of the week. You’re a mobile stylist now, and the part of your setup that keeps tripping you up is the wash. A traditional backwash unit needs plumbing, and most clients’ apartments don’t

I watched a stylist carry a stack of color bowls from the back room to her station — three trips, arms full, hair products tucked under her chin. Her salon had invested in expensive chairs and mirrors, but they skimped on the salon cart trolley. So every single day, that stylist wasted 15 minutes just

I watched a client nearly slide off the pedicure chair last month. Her foot slipped off the rest, she kicked the bowl, and water went everywhere. The nail tech looked at me and said, “This is the third time this week.” The problem? The salon bought a cheap pedicure foot rest that was too narrow

My buddy’s barbershop had a towel warmer that took forty-five minutes to heat up. He’d throw a cold, damp towel on my neck during a shave and I’d jump off the chair. He said, “It’s fine, it’s just a little chilly.” No, man. It’s not fine. A cold towel on a hot, sweaty neck is

My first esthetician magnifying lamp was a $60 clamp-on piece of junk. Sounded like a blender, the light flickered so bad I got headaches, and the 5x lens made my client’s pores look like lunar craters… but not in a useful way. Three months in, the arm drooped like a tired daisy and I had

If you’re opening a salon, you’ll quickly realize that the shampoo area is where the magic happens. It’s also where clients decide if they love you or hate you. I remember having a client with a bad neck, and my old sink was so deep she had to crane her neck at a terrible angle.

I remember a client asking me to dry her hair faster because she was late for a meeting. I was using an old, weak dryer and it took forever. Then I upgraded to a proper salon heat lamp and my blowouts got faster and smoother. But here’s the thing: I also burned a client’s scalp
