I was scrolling through Instagram last month and saw a salon in Miami that had this insane reception desk. It wasn’t flat. It had these vertical grooves running down the front, like a ribbed texture. It caught the light in a way that made the whole entrance look dynamic. I immediately texted the owner and

I had a client who was opening a bridal studio. She wanted it to feel airy, clean, and bright. She initially picked a dark walnut wood reception desk. I told her, ‘You are a bridal studio, not a law firm.’ We swapped it for a white reception desk with a subtle marble texture. The change

The first salon I consulted for had a beige reception desk. Beige. It was the color of oatmeal, and it made the whole space feel like a waiting room at a clinic. The owners were wondering why their vibe felt off. I told them to paint it black. Not literally paint the laminate, but to

I remember my first month of doing lashes full-time. I was working out of a tiny studio, and I thought I was being smart by buying a cheap $40 ring light from a big-box store. Big mistake. By 3 PM, my eyes were swimming, I couldn’t tell the difference between a .07 and .10 fan,

A nail tech in Chicago told me her clients love the ‘portable foot spa’ experience but her salon couldn’t afford a $3,000 pedicure chair. I showed her a portable foot spa that does the same job for $200. She bought two, and now she offers a ‘quick soak’ service for $15 while clients are waiting

A nail salon owner in Atlanta told me she had to replace three pedicure bowls in one year because they kept cracking. She was buying the cheapest acrylic basins she could find. I explained that the bowl is the most stressed part of a pedicure chair—hot water, chemicals, and constant weight. This guide is about

I got a call from a salon owner in Ohio who’d bought a shampoo bowl online without checking the dimensions. It was 4 inches too deep for her counter and the neck rest was at the wrong angle. She had to pay a contractor $400 to redo the cutout. That’s a rookie mistake that costs

Last year, a stylist in Denver called me in a panic. She’d just booked three wedding parties—eight bridesmaids each—and the salon’s only backwash was in a cramped corner. She needed a second station but had zero plumbing. I shipped her a portable shampoo sink with a 20-gallon tank, and she did all 24 blowouts from

Last month, a client walked into my shop and said she’d been doing red light therapy at a med spa for three months. She asked if we could install a full bed because the 20-minute sessions were the only thing that helped her knee pain. I sat her down, pulled up photos of both setups,

Not every salon has the luxury of built-in plumbing at every station. Maybe you’re renting a booth, maybe you’re a traveling stylist who does house calls, or maybe you’re setting up a pop-up shop for an event. In any of these situations, a traditional shampoo bowl with a fixed drain isn’t an option. That’s where
