My stylist quit last month. Not because of pay — because her station had a drawer that stuck, a mirror that wobbled, and no place to plug in her flat iron without crawling under the counter. She said, ‘I’m tired of working at a desk that feels like a school project.’ That’s what a bad

My esthetician called me at 9 PM, furious. The ‘massage beds for sale‘ she found online looked perfect in the photo, but the face cradle was 4 inches too narrow. ‘I can’t do a single back treatment without the client’s nose touching the table.’ That’s a $400 mistake. I get it — every bed looks

Walk into any new salon that’s about to fail, and you’ll see the same mistake: a $2,000 reception desk, $800 styling chairs, and a $400 facial machine that’s been sitting in the box for three months. The owner bought ‘pretty’ instead of ‘functional.’ I’ve been in this industry for 15 years, and I can tell

A braider in Atlanta called me last week, frustrated. She’d bought a “chair in salon” from an online auction for $90. Three days later, the hydraulic lift dropped mid-braid, and her client nearly hit her head on the floor. She said, “I just need something that doesn’t collapse.” That’s the bare minimum. But a true

Last month, a salon owner in Dallas texted me a photo of her back room: three mismatched chairs, one with duct tape on the armrest, another that squeaked like a dying bird every time a client leaned back. She said, “I need chairs for hair salon that don’t embarrass me in front of stylists.” I

A spa owner in Denver told me a story. She bought a cheap “spa chair” from a local furniture store because it looked comfortable. It was a recliner from a living room set. The first client sat down for a pedicure, and the chair’s motor whined, then died. The client was stuck halfway reclined for

There’s a reason old barber shops had that heavy, cast-iron chair with the leather seat. It wasn’t just for looks—it was a tool that withstood 12-hour days, six days a week, for decades. Today, the demand for vintage barber chairs is higher than ever, but so is the supply of cheap reproductions that look the

I walked into a new barbershop in Charlotte last week. The owner had bought three “vintage style” chairs from an online auction. They looked great in the photos. In person, they were wobbly, the hydraulic pump leaked oil, and the seat base was too small for a 300 lb client. The barber told me he

Last fall, a stylist from a booth-rental salon in Austin texted me: “My landlord said no plumbing changes. But clients are complaining about the neck cradle on my $80 plastic basin. Help.” That message is why I’m writing this. If you work in a rented chair, a home studio, or a mobile setup, you know

A stylist in Seattle told me she was “done with backaches.” She’d been washing hair with clients sitting in a regular styling chair, leaning them back over a plastic basin. Her chiropractor bill was higher than her rent. She finally invested in a proper shampoo bowls salon setup, and within a month, her pain was
